The discovery is forcing scientists to reconsider long-held assumptions about Antarctica and raising new questions about what may be happening beneath the continent’s vast ice sheet.
Researchers admit that the findings reveal that far less is known about the frozen continent’s geology than experts previously believed.
AI Uncovers Hidden Seismic Activity
The findings were published in the journal Science after researchers used deep-learning algorithms to reanalyze seismic data collected between 2001-2004 and 2012-2015.
The earthquakes themselves were relatively small, ranging from magnitudes 1.6 to 3.5.
However, what shocked scientists was where they occurred.
The quakes originated more than 43 miles beneath the surface, which is far deeper than where most earthquakes are typically expected to occur.
Even more puzzling, they were discovered in the middle of tectonic plates rather than along the fault lines where seismic activity usually takes place.
Researchers described the phenomenon as difficult to explain using traditional geological models.
According to the study, the events represent a class of “intraplate intermediate-depth earthquakes” that do not fit neatly within current theories of plate tectonics.

Antarctica May Be Far More Active Than Previously Thought
Scientists now believe Antarctica’s underground structure may be far more complex than previously understood.
Researchers suggest the earthquakes are being triggered by a clash between the colder, rigid crust beneath East Antarctica and warmer, softer rock beneath West Antarctica.
“The earthquakes occur where the cold, rigid crust and upper mantle beneath East Antarctica meets warmer, softer rock beneath West Antarctica, and this contrast creates an abrupt change in tectonic strength,” explained lead researcher Long Ho of the University of Alabama.
The sheer number of earthquakes detected has surprised experts.
For decades, Antarctica was widely viewed as one of the least seismically active places on Earth.
That assumption is now being challenged.
The revelation comes amid a series of unusual discoveries being made deep beneath the Earth’s surface.
Earlier this year, scientists also identified a separate category of mysterious “continental mantle earthquakes” occurring roughly 55 miles below sea level.
While researchers believe different geological processes are responsible for those events, both discoveries point to significant gaps in scientific understanding of what is happening beneath the planet’s crust.
The Antarctica findings suggest there may be many more hidden seismic zones around the world that have gone undetected due to limitations in previous monitoring technology.
Researchers now believe artificial intelligence could uncover similar activity in other supposedly stable regions.
“Advanced seismic detection capabilities, such as those used here, could reveal that intraplate IDEs are more common globally than currently recognized,” the study states.

The discovery is particularly significant because Antarctica continues to be one of the least understood regions on Earth.
Beneath miles of ice lies a largely hidden landscape that scientists are only beginning to explore.
The continent has already yielded surprising discoveries in recent years, including vast underground mountain ranges, hidden lakes, volcanic systems, and evidence of geological activity far below the ice sheet.
Now, with hundreds of previously unknown earthquakes emerging from deep beneath the frozen continent, researchers are warning that Antarctica may be concealing far more geological secrets than anyone realized.
For now, scientists have stopped short of saying that the earthquakes pose an immediate threat.
But the findings are a stark reminder that even beneath one of the most isolated and seemingly lifeless places on Earth, powerful forces continue to move unseen beneath the ice.
