Bill Gates Testifies Epstein Tried to Use Affairs as Leverage During House Hearing
Microsoft co-founder Bill Gates told congressional investigators Wednesday that convicted child predator Jeffrey Epstein attempted to use knowledge of his extramarital affairs to pressure him into maintaining a relationship, according to testimony delivered before the House Oversight Committee.
Microsoft co-founder Bill Gates told congressional investigators Wednesday that convicted child predator Jeffrey Epstein attempted to use knowledge of his extramarital affairs to pressure him into maintaining a relationship, according to testimony delivered before the House Oversight Committee.
Gates appeared voluntarily before the Republican-led panel as part of its ongoing investigation into Epstein’s network of powerful associates and contacts.
While Gates has not been accused of any wrongdoing, lawmakers have sought answers about his decision to continue meeting with Epstein after the financier’s 2008 conviction for child sex crimes.
Gates Calls Relationship with Epstein a “Grave Error”
In prepared remarks, Gates acknowledged that spending time with Epstein was a “grave error in judgment” and said he deeply regrets the association.
The billionaire told lawmakers that he knew Epstein had a criminal record but did not fully understand the scope of his offenses when discussions began about potential philanthropic and global health initiatives.
“As the public can now see, based on what has been released in the files, Epstein was working to use information about my infidelities,” Gates claimed in his statement.
Gates admitted he had been unfaithful during his marriage to Melinda French Gates and said Epstein eventually became aware of those affairs.
According to Gates, he later concluded that Epstein was attempting to use that information to regain influence over him after their relationship deteriorated.
“These affairs had nothing to do with my interactions with Epstein,” Gates said.
He added that Epstein combined truthful details about his personal life with what he described as false claims in an effort to gain leverage.
Epstein Sought Influence Through Powerful Connections
Gates told lawmakers that Epstein’s efforts ultimately failed and that he cut off contact with the disgraced financier.
“He was unsuccessful in this effort, but it shows some of the ways he tried to leverage his interactions with me to further his agenda,” he said.
“I should never have met with Epstein in the first place.
“Based on what I know now, I understand that even if he had delivered the new donors he promised, it would not have justified associating with him.”
Gates said he now believes Epstein deliberately cultivated relationships with influential figures to enhance his own credibility and protect himself from scrutiny.
“I see now that he sought to build an image of legitimacy around himself, using connections to reputable and powerful people to deflect scrutiny and attempt to rehabilitate his reputation,” Gates added.
“I was so focused on the possibility of raising funds for global health that I allowed that goal to override my better judgment.”
The testimony comes as House Oversight Committee Chairman Rep. James Comer (R-KY) continues an expansive review of records and individuals connected to Epstein.
Thousands of pages of documents released through federal investigations and congressional inquiries have renewed scrutiny of Epstein’s relationships with prominent figures across business, politics, academia, and philanthropy.
Gates reiterated that he never witnessed any criminal conduct by Epstein and denied ever visiting Epstein’s private island or participating in any illegal activities.
He also stated that none of the philanthropic projects or fundraising efforts discussed with Epstein ever materialized.
According to Gates, the meetings centered primarily on global health initiatives and charitable work, but no meaningful partnerships emerged from those discussions.
The Microsoft founder has repeatedly described his association with Epstein as a serious mistake and has acknowledged that the relationship damaged both his personal reputation and that of the Gates Foundation.
Earlier this year, Gates reportedly told foundation employees that spending time with Epstein was a “huge mistake” and noted that his former wife had long expressed concerns about the relationship.
Gates is among the highest-profile witnesses to appear before the committee as lawmakers continue examining the network of influential individuals connected to Epstein and the circumstances that allowed him to maintain relationships with prominent figures for years after his criminal conviction.
