According to a report from the Daily Mail, foreclosure filings across the United States jumped sharply in April 2026, signaling mounting financial pressure on American families amid persistent high borrowing costs and affordability challenges.
New data from real estate analytics firm ATTOM revealed that 42,430 properties nationwide received foreclosure filings last month. These included initial default notices, scheduled auctions, and completed bank repossessions.
While activity dipped slightly from March, the year-over-year increase of 18 percent has raised concerns reminiscent of warning signs before the 2008 financial crisis.
“Foreclosure activity continued its gradual trend higher in April,” ATTOM Chief Executive Rob Barber said. “The year-over-year increases suggest lenders may be working through distressed inventory as higher borrowing costs and affordability challenges impact some homeowners.”
Foreclosure starts, the initial stage of the process, rose 12 percent annually to 28,414 properties. Completed repossessions—where banks take ownership after missed payments—surged 42 percent to 5,098 homes. Despite these rises, overall activity remains below pre-pandemic levels.
States hardest hit included Delaware, with one foreclosure filing for every 1,739 housing units, followed closely by South Carolina and Florida. Among major metros, Lakeland, Florida, led with the highest rate at one in every 1,221 units. Florida also topped the list for new foreclosure starts, with Texas and California following.
Cities like Pittsburgh, Austin, and Raleigh saw some of the most dramatic spikes in activity compared to the previous year. Texas recorded the most completed repossessions, with California and Florida next.
