Award-winning investigative journalist Karen Hao reveals what 80 to 90 OpenAI employees told her about Sam Altman in interviews for her bestselling book Empire of AI. She explains that every single person she spoke to held an extreme view: either Altman is the Steve Jobs of this generation, the greatest tech leader alive, or he is manipulative, an abuser, and a liar. Nobody had an in-between opinion.
She describes how Dario Amodei, now the CEO of Anthropic and the maker of Claude, was originally an executive at OpenAI who believed he and Altman shared the same vision. Over time, Amodei came to feel that Altman had used his intelligence and capabilities to build something he fundamentally disagreed with, which is why he left to start a competing company. She reveals that Ilya Sutskever, co-founder of OpenAI, was instrumental in trying to get Altman fired for the same reason: he felt Altman was actively undermining both the pursuit of artificial general intelligence and the goal of making it safe.
