Venezuela’s descent into poverty, desperation and organised crime is a cautionary tale about the dangers of socialism. Young socialists should take heed, Paul Meuller writes.

Venezuelan Tragedy: Socialism, Entitlement and Tyranny Are Connected

The shocking capture and extradition of former Venezuelan President Nicolas Maduro and his wife over the weekend is the culmination of months of US pressure on the regime. President Trump and other administration officials have labelled Maduro and his close associates “narco-terrorists,” accusing him of leading a huge criminal organisation and profiting by violating US laws, selling large quantities of illegal narcotics which may have potentially killed Americans.

But while the future of the Venezuelan regime is uncertain, it is worth taking a few minutes to understand how Venezuela got to where it is today and what Americans can learn from its descent into a tyrannical/criminal regime.

The time for a warning may be especially appropriate. Zohran Mamdani’s election as New York City’s next mayor and Katie Wilson’s election as mayor of Seattle, both late last year, have people worrying about a surge in socialist sentiment across the US. Both Mamdani and Wilson openly campaigned as democratic socialists who believe: “No problem is too big, no issue is too small for the government” and “We will replace the frigidity of rugged individualism with the warmth of collectivism.”

Many with a lick of sense correctly criticise the naivety of these socialist economic policy ideas and collectivist sentiments. But fewer recognise the true horrors that can be unleashed by entitled college graduates voting for massive wealth redistribution.

The tragedy of Venezuela serves as a cautionary tale.

Socialism plays the major role in the story of Venezuela’s descent into poverty, desperation, and organised crime (Tren de Aragua). David Friedberg, a venture capitalist and a member of the All-In Podcast, recently interviewed Nobel Peace Prize winner María Corina Machado about the fraudulent 2024 national election in Venezuela – highlighting the tragedy of socialism and the resulting tyranny in Venezuela.

Twenty-five years ago, its GDP was roughly $4,800 per person. In 2014, it was nearly $16,000. But the latest estimates for 2024 and 2025 are about $4,000 per person – roughly 20 per cent less than in 2000 and a shocking 75 per cent less than in 2014. Poverty rates in Venezuela have skyrocketed from less than a quarter of its population to over half. Yet, Venezuela has the largest known oil reserves of any country in the world – an estimated 300 billion barrels – 10 per cent more than Saudi Arabia and seven times more than the United States.

At least seven million Venezuelans have fled the country in the past ten years, most of them college-educated. The Maduro regime was a criminal enterprise. Besides Maduro himself, several of his family members have been arrested for trafficking cocaine. The government stole the property of its people as well as plundering the country’s natural resources. The regime has also been accused of cooperating with drug trafficking and cartel activity – hence the Trump administration’s focus on Venezuelan gangs and trafficking described as “narco-terrorism.”

Venezuela’s 2024 presidential election showcased remarkable courage and ingenuity on the part of those who opposed the Maduro regime. It was also the clearest expression yet of how utterly criminal and corrupt Maduro was. The main opposition candidate, María Corina Machado, after a resounding victory in the primaries, was prohibited by the government from running.

Her lesser-known proxy, Edmundo González, still won overwhelmingly. And we know he won because Venezuelans documented their election results in incredible ways and reported those results to the rest of the world. The European Union, the European Parliament and Human Rights Watch all rejected Maduro’s victory, as did other election watchers, who declared González the winner.

Yet today, González is in exile, and many of those who worked on the campaign are in prison or worse. Maduro claimed victory, against all evidence, and threw dissidents and those who supported them, or even associated with them, into prison. We see truly Mafia-like behaviour in disappearing and blacklisting people simply for doing business with the “opposition.” A United Nations report found “evidence of unlawful executions, enforced disappearances, arbitrary detentions and torture” in Venezuela under the Maduro regime.

The state of things in Venezuela is dire and complicated. Much has been written about the highly tenuous legality of military strikes on Venezuelan drug traffickers. And much more will be written about the apprehension of Maduro and his wife in the dead of the night. While the Trump administration should do more to align with constitutional norms and the rule of law, this is not exactly a repeat of the drug war of the 1990s.

The Maduro regime was actively supporting oppressive parties across Latin America as well as strengthening drug cartels that, in many countries, basically constitute paramilitary forces. Those who want to advance freedom, property rights and prosperity across the western hemisphere should not overlook the geopolitical force of Venezuela.

It’s tragic how far Venezuela has fallen. From a prosperous, successful, cultured society, it has become destitute, crime-ridden and ruled by military thugs. But its initial step towards modern serfdom was much more innocent – and should serve as an eerie warning for the collectivist inclinations of the young and entitled.

Hugo Chávez, the architect of Venezuelan socialism and tyranny, paved the way for Nicolas Maduro to rule by military fiat. Chávez, though, was popularly elected and portrayed himself as an outsider and a man of the people – someone who would refuse to go along with the corrupt “neoliberalism” that he claimed had disenfranchised so many.

Sound familiar?

There has been a lot of talk about how hard young people have it in the US. Buying a house is more difficult, because homes are more expensive and financing costs are high. Unemployment among 20-24-year-olds is more than double the unemployment rate for the rest of the population. Student debt continues to rise at an alarming rate – both in aggregate and for individual young college graduates.

But the recent interview with María Corina Machado reveals how the young and entitled, and their sympathisers, miss the central justification of a free society. Machado notes that the young socialists in Venezuela, when they were warned to watch out, would “always answer, ‘Venezuela is not Cuba. That’s not going to happen to us.’ And at the end, look at the disaster and devastation.”

Socialists have exploited this discontent. In New York City, Mamdani tapped into the frustration with housing, with jobs, with rent, with prices, and with uneven wealth gains in the stock market. Income and wealth inequality frustrate many young people. Declining income mobility frustrates them. They increasingly feel like the deck is stacked against them.

Although such concerns are real, they hardly justify a socialist impulse – and not just because socialism won’t fix these problems. What these young idealists (or entitled ignoramuses) don’t know is the story of Venezuela and nearly a dozen other countries that have tread this path already. In Venezuela, they don’t just have an expensive housing problem, or an income mobility problem, or an income and wealth inequality problem.

They have much deeper problems: lack of hope and lack of opportunity. In the United States, even with the challenges mentioned above, people can still find jobs, even if those jobs pay less than they would like. They can usually choose to work more hours if they want to make more money. They can move about freely. They are not beaten or imprisoned for social media posts or for supporting the “wrong” candidates. They can improve their lives. They can build for the future. Even if achieving success has become harder than in the past, that is far different from success not being possible.

And that’s the real danger, and the real tragedy, of Venezuela. Socialism isn’t just about inefficiency and becoming poorer – though it does cause both those things. Socialism leads to tyranny where the worst rise to the top, civil society is destroyed by political power, and the opportunity to improve one’s life doesn’t just diminish, it is extinguished.

Although Venezuelans’ future prospects have brightened considerably with the removal of Maduro, we should continue to point out the dangers of socialist regimes with increasing urgency to generations of people who know little about history or global affairs, care even less and are merrily traipsing down the ‘Road to Serfdom’.

It’s probably worth flagging the fact that the president of the United States is promoting the establishment of a Ministry of Truth to restrict speech in a suggested law called the “Charlie Kirk Act”.

President Trump’s Truth Social account posted a viral video from TikTok on Saturday in which a Trump voter named Elly May blamed the assassination of Republican political operative Charlie Kirk on the press, urging the president to push for legislation which would make “news corporations accountable for lying to the American people and spreading propaganda instead of truth.”

May frames the idea as a revisitation of the Smith-Mundt Act, but then goes on to describe authoritarian measures which have nothing to do with Smith-Mundt.

“President Trump, as a supporter who voted for you 3 times, I am hoping and praying that you will revisit what Barack Obama and Joe Biden got rid of back in 2013, which is the Smith-Mundt Act, which held news corporations accountable for lying to the American people and spreading propaganda instead of truth,” May says. “I think instead of bringing it back as a Smith-Mundt Act, you name it the Charlie Kirk Act, make it a law, and you make it damn near impossible for these people to continue to lie to the American public, which has brought chaos, hatred, division, and anarchy all across this country. Fines out their ass which will damn near bankrupt their companies should they lie to the American people ever again.”

“Because of their constant lies, a man lost his life, because of the constant hateful rhetoric of calling him a fascist, and a Nazi, and a white supremacist, and a bigot,” May said. “I think this would be a great legacy for him to have a law named after him to force journalists to finally start telling the truth and having the integrity that they have lacked for over a decade.”

“We are on a dangerous path right now with the constant lies and the propaganda,” May says. “And that doesn’t end just at news journalists. It needs to go to content creators who consistently spread lies and propaganda and half-truths across the internet. This needs to end, and people need to start being held accountable for baseless claims over absolute abysmal things.”

“Get this in front of Congress, get this passed as a law, and start holding these news corporations — be they right, left or center — accountable for their behavior,” May concludes.

May has been promoting a Change dot org petition to “Enact the Charlie Kirk Act to Restore Media Accountability,” which as of this writing has tens of thousands of signatures.

“This amended act will hold media outlets, radio stations, educators, and content creators accountable for the false narratives and erroneous information they spread deliberately or irresponsibly,” the petition reads, proposing heavy fines for those deemed to be in violation.

A couple of issues with this.

Firstly, the Smith-Mundt Act had nothing to do with holding “news corporations accountable for lying to the American people”; it was a Cold War-era law which prohibited official US government propaganda created by institutions like the State Department and the USAGM from being disseminated domestically. This law was controversially revised under the Smith-Mundt Modernization Act of 2012 in the name of combatting Al Qaeda propaganda campaigns in the United States.

Returning Smith-Mundt to its original iteration would be a fine idea. American right wingers tend to make a much bigger deal about the changes made under the Obama administration than is actually warranted — anyone who remembers the lead-up to the Iraq invasion knows the US government had no trouble getting immensely consequential propaganda circulating throughout the American press prior to 2013. But anything that inhibits the US government’s ability to disseminate propaganda to Americans might be somewhat helpful, and couldn’t hurt.

But that isn’t what this “Charlie Kirk Act” push is advocating. Smith-Mundt placed restrictions on what the US government is allowed to do with regard to propaganda, while the proposed “Charlie Kirk Act” would give the US government sweeping new powers to decide what does and does not constitute propaganda and untruth and administer penalties accordingly. One limits the US government’s ability to manipulate public information, while the other explicitly expands it. Nobody anywhere is claiming that propaganda generated by the US State Department or USAGM projects like Voice of America got Charlie Kirk assassinated by calling him a Nazi; they’re talking about creating a new law to stomp out the free speech of “media outlets, radio stations, educators, and content creators.”

The other issue is of course that giving the government the authority to penalize propaganda and lies means giving the government the authority to determine what constitutes propaganda and lies. They could decide it’s a lie to say Israel is committing genocide in Gaza, for example, or that it’s propaganda to say the US shouldn’t be waging a proxy war in Ukraine. The “Charlie Kirk Act” is being pushed in the name of fighting propaganda, but it would actually be giving the US government unprecedented authority over what Americans are permitted to say on any platform.

This could of course turn out to be nothing and fizzle right away, but when the president of the United States starts pushing for the establishment of a Ministry of Truth to determine what Americans are allowed to say, I think that’s worth drawing attention to.

I’m just amazed at the virality of this whole thing. The American right’s frenzied emotional hysteria about the murder of Charlie Kirk has them promoting an initiative that is not meaningfully different from the Ministry of Truth proposed under the Biden administration’s “Disinformation Governance Board”, which was aborted after massive public outcry from the right. And that was just three years ago.

I’ve said it many times before and I’ll surely say it many times again: when everyone’s emotions are running hot, that’s when it’s most important to be intensely skeptical of everything your government does. We learned this lesson after 9/11, we were reminded again after October 7, and we may very well be getting another lesson with the killing of Charlie Kirk.

In the UK, the Online Safety Act (OSA) was sold to the public as a way to shield vulnerable people from harmful content, and protect children from internet predators. It sounded like it would ensure a safer, more accountable online experience. The true motivation for its implementation is revealing itself, and is being met by waves of backlash – not only by privacy campaigners, but from regular internet users, tech professionals, artists, and whole sections of parliament. Hundreds of thousands have signed petitions, and legal challenges are underway.

Increasingly, then, the question is being asked: was this ever really about safety?

What This UK Law Actually Does

The OSA gives Ofcom (the UK’s communications regulator) unprecedented power over the country’s digital content. It now mandates that platforms proactively monitor, censor and remove any content it deems “harmful”, even if there’s nothing illegal about it. This includes, by increasingly blurry definitions, hate speech, misinformation and bullying – and can even introduce jailtime for companies failing to comply with them.

Among the most vocal opponents are the encrypted messaging apps, Whatsapp and Signal. The OSA means government regulators can compel these services to install backdoor services to scan the content of messages, which fundamentally undermines the core principle of their end-to-end encryption offerings. Any companies found refusing to comply may now be fined, blocked, or even criminalised. In short: the privacy we were promised is now being mandated against.

This Act also criminalises “unauthorised access” to online content, which critics say could affect basic functions like right-clicking certain things, viewing source code, or accessing archived information.

It’s legislation with sweeping intent, but vague definitions.

The Great Push Back

Over 300,000 people have already signed petitions demanding urgent reform, or total repeal, of the law. Tech experts have confirmed that it can potentially “break” the internet by requiring companies to do things that are either privacy-destructive, or technically impossible. Reform UK has vowed to repeal the Act totally if elected. Conservative MPs are seemingly split, with a growing number now expressing unease over the law’s scope and implementation.

Writers, artists, and musicians have criticised how the Act suppresses political or controversial content under the vague “harm” banner. Journalists say it’s threatening investigative reporting, academics say it will limit digital research and chill free speech, and cybersecurity professionals warn that the law undermines basic encryption, putting users at risk.

This has grown from being a fringe campaign to a nationwide, cross-ideology backlash.

When “Safety” Becomes Control

Public safety was the official justification for the Act, but critics argue that it’s another measure aimed to monitor and control what the public get up to.

This is particularly concerning when considering Ofcom’s granted power of encrypted platforms. It’s one thing for governments to demand the right to scan private messages in the name of “safety” – and it’s another to criminalise its refusal.

As The Critic said: the law is treating adults like disobedient children, and The Spectator compared the Act to internet regulation in authoritarian regimes. There’s a clear growing concern that the OSA is not a public safety measure at all, but is rather a tool to discipline the space and its users – an early step towards controlling what can be said, how, and by whom.

Why Now?

The UK is in a period of high public distrust of its government. There’s economic strain, mass migration, and generally volatile political sentiment. Online platforms are arenas in which dissent still finds traction, with articles being published, memes shared, and videos posted, expressing dissatisfaction with current events.

Public sentiment is poor in the country, and censoring how and where people can express these feelings – and even hiding the protests or demonstrations that showcase how the public is feeling – is not having the intended effect. It’s making people more outraged, not less.

The OSA, therefore, feels like a way of managing dissent under the guise of protection. Perhaps trying to fragment any political opposition to stop it becoming organised, and a way to throttle speech while telling people it’s for their own good.

Censoring the Edges

Under the Act, content deemed vaguely “harmful” – even if not illegal – is still subject to penalty. This can include political criticism, satire, and controversial opinions. Content moderation algorithms will now need to make moral judgements about what qualifies as emotionally or mentally damaging. These are systems that are already fallible. Will there be any oversight or appeal to these digital decisions?

For critics, this is where the law becomes dangerous. There is a blurry line between harm and offence, giving regulators the ability to redefine these terms as they see fit, with near-total discretion to remove or suppress content that deviates from their imagined centre. Online reactions display the thoughts of many:

“And there it is, the real reason for the OSA — the prevention of wrongthink. Can’t have the plebs thinking outside the status quo”

“Funny how gambling adverts on YouTube seem to be exempt.”

With the following also including the recent decision to lower the voting age in the UK:

“16-year-olds will be allowed to vote, but won’t be able to learn what is happening in their own country?”

“This blocks 16 year olds from seeing news footage from warzones. So now we’re in the place where they can vote for a party that wants to go to war but not view the consequences of that.”

Thoughts like these are being echoed nationwide. They are not put forward by fringe conspiracy theorists, but ordinary people trying to reconcile the contradiction between an open society and a closely controlled information architecture.

Public Mood & Rise of Reform UK

Reform UK, under the leadership of Zia Yusuf, has made repealing the Act a central plank of its campaign. Yusuf recently told supporters that the Act is a “borderline dystopian overreach” and a betrayal of democratic principle. His criticism taps into a broader frustration: that the people who supposedly serve the public no longer trust them to think, speak, or decide for themselves.

What makes the current backlash unique is how unifying it is. For once, tech libertarians, artists, and populists are on the same side. They all see the same threat: that this isn’t about safety at all. It’s about obedience.

Changing the Infrastructure of Speech

Laws like this change the way we operate. The internet is altered with friction rather than with force. Platforms pre-emptively remove content in anticipation of fines, journalists pause before publishing, whistleblowers go quiet, and the public learns to think twice before speaking to ensure they don’t get censored.

Final Thought

The Online Safety Act is the start of a new chapter in how speech is governed in the UK. And it’s clearly extremely unpopular with the public. If the goal is safety, then the government seems to have missed. If the goal is control, then it’s well on its way.

This includes, by increasingly blurry definitions, hate speech, misinformation and bullying – and can even introduce jailtime for companies failing to comply with them.

Among the most vocal opponents are the encrypted messaging apps, Whatsapp and Signal. The OSA means government regulators can compel these services to install backdoor services to scan the content of messages, which fundamentally undermines the core principle of their end-to-end encryption offerings. Any companies found refusing to comply may now be fined, blocked, or even criminalised. In short: the privacy we were promised is now being mandated against.

This Act also criminalises “unauthorised access” to online content, which critics say could affect basic functions like right-clicking certain things, viewing source code, or accessing archived information.

It’s legislation with sweeping intent, but vague definitions.

The Great Push Back

Over 300,000 people have already signed petitions demanding urgent reform, or total repeal, of the law. Tech experts have confirmed that it can potentially “break” the internet by requiring companies to do things that are either privacy-destructive, or technically impossible. Reform UK has vowed to repeal the Act totally if elected. Conservative MPs are seemingly split, with a growing number now expressing unease over the law’s scope and implementation.

Writers, artists, and musicians have criticised how the Act suppresses political or controversial content under the vague “harm” banner. Journalists say it’s threatening investigative reporting, academics say it will limit digital research and chill free speech, and cybersecurity professionals warn that the law undermines basic encryption, putting users at risk.

This has grown from being a fringe campaign to a nationwide, cross-ideology backlash.

When “Safety” Becomes Control

Public safety was the official justification for the Act, but critics argue that it’s another measure aimed to monitor and control what the public get up to.

This is particularly concerning when considering Ofcom’s granted power of encrypted platforms. It’s one thing for governments to demand the right to scan private messages in the name of “safety” – and it’s another to criminalise its refusal.

As The Critic said: the law is treating adults like disobedient children, and The Spectator compared the Act to internet regulation in authoritarian regimes. There’s a clear growing concern that the OSA is not a public safety measure at all, but is rather a tool to discipline the space and its users – an early step towards controlling what can be said, how, and by whom.

Why Now?

The UK is in a period of high public distrust of its government. There’s economic strain, mass migration, and generally volatile political sentiment. Online platforms are arenas in which dissent still finds traction, with articles being published, memes shared, and videos posted, expressing dissatisfaction with current events.

Public sentiment is poor in the country, and censoring how and where people can express these feelings – and even hiding the protests or demonstrations that showcase how the public is feeling – is not having the intended effect. It’s making people more outraged, not less.

The OSA, therefore, feels like a way of managing dissent under the guise of protection. Perhaps trying to fragment any political opposition to stop it becoming organised, and a way to throttle speech while telling people it’s for their own good.

Censoring the Edges

Under the Act, content deemed vaguely “harmful” – even if not illegal – is still subject to penalty. This can include political criticism, satire, and controversial opinions. Content moderation algorithms will now need to make moral judgements about what qualifies as emotionally or mentally damaging. These are systems that are already fallible. Will there be any oversight or appeal to these digital decisions?

For critics, this is where the law becomes dangerous. There is a blurry line between harm and offence, giving regulators the ability to redefine these terms as they see fit, with near-total discretion to remove or suppress content that deviates from their imagined centre. Online reactions display the thoughts of many:

“And there it is, the real reason for the OSA — the prevention of wrongthink. Can’t have the plebs thinking outside the status quo”

“Funny how gambling adverts on YouTube seem to be exempt.”

With the following also including the recent decision to lower the voting age in the UK:

“16-year-olds will be allowed to vote, but won’t be able to learn what is happening in their own country?”

“This blocks 16 year olds from seeing news footage from warzones. So now we’re in the place where they can vote for a party that wants to go to war but not view the consequences of that.”

Thoughts like these are being echoed nationwide. They are not put forward by fringe conspiracy theorists, but ordinary people trying to reconcile the contradiction between an open society and a closely controlled information architecture.

Public Mood & Rise of Reform UK

Reform UK, under the leadership of Zia Yusuf, has made repealing the Act a central plank of its campaign. Yusuf recently told supporters that the Act is a “borderline dystopian overreach” and a betrayal of democratic principle. His criticism taps into a broader frustration: that the people who supposedly serve the public no longer trust them to think, speak, or decide for themselves.

What makes the current backlash unique is how unifying it is. For once, tech libertarians, artists, and populists are on the same side. They all see the same threat: that this isn’t about safety at all. It’s about obedience.

Changing the Infrastructure of Speech

Laws like this change the way we operate. The internet is altered with friction rather than with force. Platforms pre-emptively remove content in anticipation of fines, journalists pause before publishing, whistleblowers go quiet, and the public learns to think twice before speaking to ensure they don’t get censored.

Final Thought

The Online Safety Act is the start of a new chapter in how speech is governed in the UK. And it’s clearly extremely unpopular with the public. If the goal is safety, then the government seems to have missed. If the goal is control, then it’s well on its way.
