Jimmy and Americans’ Comedian Kurt Metzger respond to Elon Musk’s comments about the Ukraine war, in which Musk argues that political and financial elites benefit from continued fighting while ordinary Ukrainians bear the human cost through conscription and battlefield deaths. Jimmy agrees with the broader idea that wars can enrich powerful interests at the public’s expense, invoking retired Marine General Smedley Butler’s description of war as a racket and Julian Assange’s argument that prolonged conflicts can serve financial and geopolitical networks rather than achieve decisive victories.

The two question Musk’s motives and point to his earlier, more contradictory statements about Ukraine, while discussing reported Starlink restrictions, Musk’s proposed peace plan, and the financial benefits SpaceX has received from Ukraine-related government contracts. They also highlight comments from Italy’s defense minister acknowledging public opposition to continued military aid while arguing that governments should not necessarily do what the public wants, which Jimmy presents as an example of the gap between public preferences and government policy.
