Medicinal marijuana is fast becoming more accepted as a a legitimate treatment thanks to scientific studies and patient’s testaments. A recent change in legislation has created fears that Monsanto are about to try and cash in on this new treatment.

Despite the fact that the U.S. Government are unwilling to change national laws, five states are about to vote to change their marijuana laws in November, and it looks likely that they will vote to join the states that have already legalized it. With more states choosing to legalese, there is a real fear that big pharmaceutical companies that are notorious for being profit-driven at the expense of health will wade into this new market.

In 2015, it came to light that Monsanto, the agrochemical corporation wanted to get involved in the marijuana business.

The news was met with a great deal of contempt from medicinal marijuana enthusiasts, and was followed by a statement from Monsanto that they had no interest in expanding into this field. In April, Spokeswoman, Charla Lord told the Willamette Week “Monsanto has not, is not and has no plans for working on cultivating cannabis.”

But activists kept a close watch on Monsanto’s movements and sure enough their suspicions were correct when it was revealed that they had made the first ever genetically modified strain of marijuana, and was also looking to patent the product.

In an effort to stop Monsanto having the monopoly on this,a pioneering biotechnology startup based in Portland have launched an online interactive guide that maps the genetic evolution of the marijuana genome, thus making it public property and harder for Monsanto to lay a claim to it.

The startup is called Phylos Bioscience, and it has been collecting samples of marijuana strains for over two years in order to sequence the plant’s DNA. The are developing a software that presented a 3-D visualization of the data, and it is about to be revealed.

Named ‘Galaxy’ the interactive guide allows you to take a tour round a three-dimensional projection of the genetic information they have drawn from the plant.
Phylos Bioscience hope that by making this information public, they can keep the information in the hands of the underground societies where it began, and out of the hands of the commercial companies.

Sales and Marketing Manager of Phylos Bioscience, Carolyn White has said “Sample collection was a huge part of this process. One side was a collaboration with growers, dispensaries and labs to collect modern samples, and the other a process of hunting down ancient landrace strains from all over the world.”

“We’ve collected samples from all over the world, and cataloged the genetic information encoded in their DNA,” Dr Holmes, Phylos’s chief science officer and molecular and evolutionary biologist and Phylos Bioscience co-founder told The New York Times.

Because of this data collected by Phylos Bioscience, it could mean better protection of intellectual property rights of marijuana growers and keep it away from the likes of Monsanto.

More than 20 years ago, genetically modified foods (GMOS) entered the market and began a new era of consumer uncertainty. Research shows that more than 90 percent of Americans support the labelling of genetically modified foods (GMOS). To date, there are over 70 bills that have been introduced in more than 30 states to require GMO labelling or put an end to GMOs altogether. There are also over 400 companies who actively support GMO labelling as a means for increasing transparency in the food system.

Unfortunately, there are also labelling opponents, such as companies like Monsanto, Kraft, Kellogg’s, and General Mills, who have all gotten away with hiding important information about our food for almost two decades. But they continue to be called out, causing an even bigger push for global food transparency.

Perhaps some of the names of GMO supporters are unsurprising, but when a company like Whole Foods, which is so dedicated to marketing themselves as the go-to for healthy, honest living, appears to side with the industry giants, it begins to feel as though corruption knows no limits.

“Whole Foods Market® believes in your right to know. We are committed to providing GMO (genetically modified organism) transparency by 2018 for all foods we sell,” says a statement on the Whole Foods website. Yet recent claims say that the grocery supplier has been lying to customers about its support for GMO labelling, and is actually now partnering with Monsanto to kill GMO labelling efforts nationwide.

Whole Foods never stated a plan to ban products containing GMOs, rather they promised that such foods would become easier to identify when shopping in their stores, yet a newly proposed bill makes it easier for the organic marketplace to diminish those standards.

The new bill would give manufacturers the choice to use a QR code (machine language) on each product to reveal information about the ingredients of the food. The problem? The language isn’t even readable by humans. The “labelling” bill won’t actually require GMO labelling or punish those who ignore it. So if passed, food system transparency advocates like Whole Foods would get to fly under this new law, and no state would be able to introduce laws that mandate GMO labels on foods containing them.

This type of law was already passed and is now in effect in Vermont, but if the recently proposed bill is passed, Vermont’s GMO labelling law will be considered null and void — something to celebrate for Big Agra companies such as Monsanto.

CEO of Whole Foods Marketplace Walter Robb backs the new bill, saying:

The alternative is that Vermont goes into effect and then there’s a number of other states behind that, it makes it difficult for manufacturers to be able to label and label to that different standard…

“And I think the way she’s put the bill together, which is to give manufacturers choices, is I think the marketplace and the customers will take it from here… so obviously, I think she’s done a great piece of work… we are already are out there further with our commitment to full transparency by 2018. We’re not gonna… we’re looking at how these two live with each other, but we’re already past that, but I think in this day and age, to come together, to create some sort of a reasonable standard that manufacturers can… and gives the customer a lot more information is a pretty good thing.

This statement seems to contradict Whole Foods’ support for more transparency in the food system. The marketplace should want the Vermont law to exist, and should urge other states to follow suit.

The EPA banned PCBs in 1979

Last week, a St. Louis Circuit Court jury awarded $46.5 million to 3 plaintiffs who alleged that PCBs made by Monsanto caused cancer. The plaintiffs alleged in the suit that Monsanto and the other defendants – Solutia, Pharmacia, and Pfizer – were negligent in their handling of PCBs.

PCB stands for polychlorinated biphenyls, a highly toxic and carcinogenic group of chemicals. Decades ago, PCBs were used in many different products, including electrical equipment, surface coatings, inks, adhesives, flame-retardants, and paints. Before morphing into the agritech giant it is today, Monsanto was the sole manufacturer of PCBs from 1935 to 1997.

The EPA banned PCBs in 1979, after the compound was linked to birth defects and cancer in laboratory animals. PCBs can affect the skin and liver in humans. It can also linger in the environment for decades.

The case involved just 3 of nearly 100 plaintiffs who alleged that exposure to PCBs caused them non-Hodgkin lymphoma. Some died and their claims were made by surviving relatives.

Steven Kherkher, the plaintiffs’ lawyer, said:

“The man from Oklahoma died at the age of 58 and had no health problems at all. He wasn’t a smoker or a drinker and he exercised, but his body was filled with Monsanto’s PCBs. He grew up in Michigan and Monsanto polluted the waters of Michigan and he suffered and died.

A lot people just don’t know that Monsanto’s PCBs are in the orange juice you drank this morning and the pizza you’ll eat tonight. The air that you’re breathing has PCBs in it. Monsanto has discounted it, saying it’s only parts per billion or parts per trillion, but it adds up.” [3]

The 3 individuals alleged that Monsanto knew decades ago that PCBs put people’s health at risk, but lied to the public, saying that the compounds were safe, and continued to sell them until the 1970’s.

EcoWatch reports that internal documents have surfaced showing the company knew about the health risks of PCBs years before they were banned by the EPA. One document, dated Sept. 20, 1955, stated:

“We know Aroclors [PCBs] are toxic but the actual limit has not been precisely defined.” [3]

To this day, some rivers, streams, and foods that humans consume still contain levels of PCBs.

Kherkher said the win means that Monsanto can no longer cover its tracks when it comes to the damage it has done to human life and the environment:

“This is the future. People don’t know that PCBs cause cancer and that Monsanto has been suppressing it.” [1]

Kherkher added that the win is a rare one, but only because nobody had the money to fight the massive corporation until his law firm, William Kherkher, and other law firms worked together, combining their resources, to propel the case forward.

He said such wins are “not going to be rare anymore,” noting that his law firm has accumulated about 1,000 plaintiffs with PCB claims.

A Los Angeles jury rejected a claim against Monsanto last month over non-Hodgkin lymphoma. And in July of 2015, a jury in St. Louis County, Missouri, found Monsanto was not liable in deaths and illnesses suffered by people who were exposed to PCBs. Americans began to wonder if Monsanto was untouchable.

A similar lawsuit was filed by the city of Spokane, Washington, last year, and in January, Seattle sued Monsanto over the costs of PCB cleanup. Both cases are pending.

The area planted with genetically modified crops globally declined for the first time in 2015.

The 1% decline — the first in the technology’s 20-year global commercial history — was primarily due to an overall decrease in both GM and non-GM crops caused by low commodity prices, says the International Service for the Acquisition of Agri-Biotech Applications (ISAAA), a non-profit biotech industry group that tracks GM crops.

But the ISAAA also said in its 13 April report that major biotech markets such as the United States — which is the largest grower of genetically modified crops — are approaching saturation, with little potential for future expansion.

The ISAAA says there is still room for growth in other countries: it estimates that there is the potential to add 100 million hectares globally, 60 million of them in Asia. The pipeline of GM crops is also growing, according to ISAAA, which says that 85 potential new products are being field-tested. More GM crop types are anticipated because gene-editing methods, including the very popular CRISPR-Cas9 are increasingly being used to engineer crops with new traits.
