Ultra-processed foods (UPFs) are a leading cause of the “chronic disease pandemic” linked to diet, with food firms putting profit above all else, global experts have warned.

Writing in The Lancet medical journal, 43 scientists and researchers joined forces to argue that UPFs are “displacing” fresh foods and meals, worsening diet quality, and are linked to multiple chronic diseases.

They said, “The key driver of the global rise in UPFs is the growing economic and political power of the UPF industry, and its restructuring of food systems for profitability above all else.

“The industry comprises UPF manufacturers at its core, but also a broader network of co-dependent actors who collectively drive the production, marketing and consumption of UPFs.”

UPFs have been linked to poor health, including an increased risk of obesity, heart disease, cancer and early death.

Examples of UPFs include ice cream, processed meats, crisps, mass-produced bread, some breakfast cereals, biscuits, many ready meals and fizzy drinks.

UPFs often contain high levels of saturated fat, salt, sugar and additives, which experts say leaves less room in people’s diets for more nutritious foods.

UPFs also tend to include additives and ingredients that are not used when people cook from scratch, such as preservatives, emulsifiers and artificial colors and flavors.

Policy responses and industry influence

Writing in The Lancet, the global team said that, although some countries have brought in rules to reformulate foods and control UPFs, “the global public health response is still nascent, akin to where the tobacco control movement was decades ago.”

They said government policy, including in high income countries like the UK, has done little to change the “commercial and structural determinants of the problem,” instead focusing on consumer responsibility, industry partnerships, and voluntary self-regulation in industry, such as when companies replace sugar in some foods with sweeteners, or reduce fat.

“This policy inertia reflects the co-ordinated efforts of the industry to skew decision making, frame policy debates in their interest, and manufacture the appearance of scientific doubt,” they said.

They argue that the main barrier to policies to protect health is “industry’s corporate political activities, coordinated transnationally through a global network of front groups, multi-stakeholder initiatives, and research partners, to counter opposition and block regulation.”

These activities include direct lobbying, “infiltrating government agencies,” and filing lawsuits, they added.

Calls for action and further research

The experts argue that the “continuing rise of UPFs in human diets is not inevitable” and, while research into their effects continues, this should not delay policies aimed at promoting diets based on whole foods.

The dietary share of UPFs remains below 25% in countries such as Italy, Cyprus, Greece, Portugal and across Asia, but it is 50% in the US and UK, the research said.

Action is needed now to tackle UPFs directly rather than relying on current measures, it added.

Professor Chris Van Tulleken, from University College London, one of the authors, told a press briefing there had been a “three-decade history of reformulation by the food industry.”

He added, “We took the fat out first, then we took the sugar out. We replaced the sugar with the sweeteners, the fats with gums. These products have been extensively reformulated and we have seen obesity, particularly obesity in childhood, and other rates of diet-related disease persistently go up in line with reformulation.

“This is not a product level discussion. The entire diet is being ultra-processed.

“And remember that built into the definition of ultra-processed food is its purpose. Its purpose is for profit. And so, as long as you’re reformulating, if your purpose is still profit, you’re unlikely to cause positive health outcomes.”

Expert opinions on evidence and causation

Several experts commenting on The Lancet papers called for more, better quality research into the impact of UPFs, adding that current studies have shown a link with poor health but not a direct cause.

Kevin McConway, emeritus professor of applied statistics at the Open University, said “it seems to me likely that at least some UPFs could cause increases in the risk of some chronic diseases (certainly not all—there’s little evidence of an increase in cancer risk, for instance).

“But this certainly doesn’t establish that all UPFs increase disease risk.

“There’s still room for doubt and for clarification from further research.”

He said he was not advocating that no public health action about UPFs is taken until all the research gaps have been filled, but said there was a need for “transparency” about “what we have good evidence for and what we don’t.”

Professor Jules Griffin, from the University of Aberdeen, said the authors had shown “a wide range of chronic diseases are associated with increased consumption of ultra-processed foods” but “association may not be causation, as the authors freely admit.”

The report, published in the journal Neuroscience and Biobehavioral Reviews, directly links these harmful substances to severe disruptions in brain development, warning that children are paying the price for a food supply poisoned by corporate greed and regulatory failure.

Naturalnews.com reports: The researchers, who conducted a narrative review synthesizing findings from more than 400 studies, concluded that neurotoxic and neurodisruptive chemicals found in everyday food and water sources are harming mental well-being, particularly among young people whose brains are still developing.

These chemicals come from a variety of sources, including pesticides sprayed on fruits, vegetables and grains; heavy metals like lead and mercury found in water and food; microplastics and endocrine disruptors leaching from plastic packaging; and ultraprocessed foods, which can contain thousands of unregulated additives under vague terms like “natural flavors.”

The review also highlights that even though older adults are also exposed to these toxins, children and teens and even fetuses in utero are far more vulnerable due to their still-developing nervous systems, lower body weight and immature metabolic systems.

In line with this, the researchers argue that this vulnerability may help explain why mental health indicators have declined so dramatically over just a few generations. They also added that early exposure can lead to long-term deficits in emotional resilience and cognitive functioning.

“Children are fundamentally more vulnerable to toxic and disruptive chemicals due to their immature metabolic pathways, the rapid maturation and plasticity of their developing brain, and their lower body weight,” the researchers wrote.

Scientists warn neurotoxic chemicals in food are overlooked drivers of youth mental health crisis

According to Brighteon.AI’s Enoch, neurotoxic chemicals in food are substances that can damage or destroy nerve tissue and brain cells, potentially leading to a range of neurological issues. These chemicals can impair cognitive function, alter behavior and contribute to mental health problems such as anxiety, depression and suicidal thoughts.

Despite this, the authors argued that most scientific and public health discussions about youth mental health continue to focus on social factors such as smartphone use, academic pressure and trauma. While these are valid concerns, Tara Thiagarajan, Ph.D., founder and chief scientist of the nonprofit Sapien Labs and one of the study’s co-authors, warned that they do not tell the full story.

“Much of the mental health discourse has been about stress, adversity and smartphones, with therapy as the primary solution,” Thiagarajan said.

She then added that scientists are missing the chemical foundation of mental resilience, criticizing the lack of coverage in elite neuroscience journals, despite a growing number of studies on these chemicals appearing in other disciplines over the past decade.

Adults and children in the United States are getting more than 50% of their total calories from ultra-processed foods, according to a new federal report released early Thursday.

Among Americans aged 1 and older, an average of 55% of their total calories came from ultra-processed foods, according to results from the National Health and Nutrition Examination Survey conducted between August 2021 and August 2023 and run by the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC).

Children aged 18 and younger consumed a higher percentage of calories from ultra-processed foods at 61.9% compared to 53% for adults aged 19 and older.

“That’s excessive,” Julia Zumpano, a registered dietitian at the Cleveland Clinic, who was not involved in the study, told ABC News. “That’s concerning. It’s way too much. … We don’t have guidelines, because why would we provide guidelines for junk food, but about 10% would be reasonable.”

It comes amid Health and Human Services Secretary Robert F. Kennedy Jr.’s crusade to rid American diets of ultra-processed foods. Recently, the White House’s Make America Healthy Again Commission, led by Kennedy, released a report blaming ultra-processed foods as one cause of the rise in chronic disease rates, such as obesity, type 2 diabetes mellitus and cardiovascular disease.

The report described ultra-processed foods as “hyperpalatable,” containing little to no whole foods and being low in dietary fiber while being high in salt, sweeteners and unhealthy fats.

Examples include most, but not all, chips, candy bars, breakfast cereals, sugar-sweetened beverages and ready-to-eat meals.

“They’re high in sugar, high in carbohydrates and high in fat,” Zampano said. “When you combine those, the taste is an explosion in your mouth and you think, ‘Wow this is good.'”

Studies have shown that consumption of ultra-processed foods has been linked to a higher risk of cardiovascular disease and all-cause mortality, the report said.

When breaking children down into smaller age groups, the report found that children between ages 1 and 5 consumed fewer calories from ultra-processed foods than children between ages 6 and 22 and pre-teens and teenagers aged 12 to 18.

Among adults, those aged 19 to 39 consumed the highest percentage of calories from ultra-processed foods at 54.4% compared to adults aged 40 to 59, who consumed 52.6%, and adults aged 60 and older, who consumed 51.7%.

However, there was a silver lining in the report. Data showed that between 2013 and 2014 and August 2021 through August 2023, average calories from ultra-processed foods fell among adults and children.

Average total calories from ultra-processed foods decreased from 55.8% in 2013 through 2014 to 53% from August 2021 to August 2023. For children, it fell from 63.8% to 61.9% over the same period.

“It’s good that we see a decline of the percentage of ultra-processed food in both children and adults,” Dr. Fang Fang Zhang, a cancer and nutrition epidemiologist and Neely Family Professor at the Friedman School of Nutrition Science and Policy at Tufts University, who was not involved in the study, told ABC News.

“I wish that there could be some analysis to see which [food subgroup consumption] is declining,” she continued. “I didn’t see that. It might be the sugars and beverages because we have done a lot of work to try to lower the consumption of sugar-sweetened beverages.”

To lower the percentage of total calories Americans are getting from ultra-processed foods, Zumpano said she would like to see less marketing of the products on television and make sure schools and parents are educated on the negative health effects of ultra-processed foods.

“If kids get a packaged snack or a dessert at school lunch every day, they think it’s okay,” she said. “Or if their parents are eating ultra-processed foods every day, then they think it’s okay. It has to come from schools, parents educating themselves and then educating their children.”

Zhang agreed, saying the reduction of ultra-processed foods in schools and workplaces “could have a long-lasting impact on the overall population level health.”

More than 20 years ago, genetically modified foods (GMOS) entered the market and began a new era of consumer uncertainty. Research shows that more than 90 percent of Americans support the labelling of genetically modified foods (GMOS). To date, there are over 70 bills that have been introduced in more than 30 states to require GMO labelling or put an end to GMOs altogether. There are also over 400 companies who actively support GMO labelling as a means for increasing transparency in the food system.

Unfortunately, there are also labelling opponents, such as companies like Monsanto, Kraft, Kellogg’s, and General Mills, who have all gotten away with hiding important information about our food for almost two decades. But they continue to be called out, causing an even bigger push for global food transparency.

Perhaps some of the names of GMO supporters are unsurprising, but when a company like Whole Foods, which is so dedicated to marketing themselves as the go-to for healthy, honest living, appears to side with the industry giants, it begins to feel as though corruption knows no limits.

“Whole Foods Market® believes in your right to know. We are committed to providing GMO (genetically modified organism) transparency by 2018 for all foods we sell,” says a statement on the Whole Foods website. Yet recent claims say that the grocery supplier has been lying to customers about its support for GMO labelling, and is actually now partnering with Monsanto to kill GMO labelling efforts nationwide.

Whole Foods never stated a plan to ban products containing GMOs, rather they promised that such foods would become easier to identify when shopping in their stores, yet a newly proposed bill makes it easier for the organic marketplace to diminish those standards.

The new bill would give manufacturers the choice to use a QR code (machine language) on each product to reveal information about the ingredients of the food. The problem? The language isn’t even readable by humans. The “labelling” bill won’t actually require GMO labelling or punish those who ignore it. So if passed, food system transparency advocates like Whole Foods would get to fly under this new law, and no state would be able to introduce laws that mandate GMO labels on foods containing them.

This type of law was already passed and is now in effect in Vermont, but if the recently proposed bill is passed, Vermont’s GMO labelling law will be considered null and void — something to celebrate for Big Agra companies such as Monsanto.

CEO of Whole Foods Marketplace Walter Robb backs the new bill, saying:

The alternative is that Vermont goes into effect and then there’s a number of other states behind that, it makes it difficult for manufacturers to be able to label and label to that different standard…

“And I think the way she’s put the bill together, which is to give manufacturers choices, is I think the marketplace and the customers will take it from here… so obviously, I think she’s done a great piece of work… we are already are out there further with our commitment to full transparency by 2018. We’re not gonna… we’re looking at how these two live with each other, but we’re already past that, but I think in this day and age, to come together, to create some sort of a reasonable standard that manufacturers can… and gives the customer a lot more information is a pretty good thing.

This statement seems to contradict Whole Foods’ support for more transparency in the food system. The marketplace should want the Vermont law to exist, and should urge other states to follow suit.
