A Colorado man who suffocated his healthy 91-year-old mother to death by placing a plastic bag over her head has avoided prison with a slap on the wrist and is now set to inherit a fortune from his dead mom’s estate.

Instead of jailing David Norton for his crime, a liberal judge ordered him to donate $25,000 to an organization that promotes “assisted suicide.”

In a cushy plea deal, Norton, 68, pleaded guilty to manslaughter by aiding suicide and tampering with physical evidence after the death of his mother, Mildred Roller.

Norton and his sister, Kim Roller, were accused of conspiring to end the elderly woman’s life.

However, their mother was not terminally ill and had not been declared mentally incompetent.

According to an autopsy reviewed by a grand jury, Mildred Roller died from “asphyxia due to a bag over the head and displacement of oxygen by nitrogen gas.”

Despite those facts, neither Norton nor his sister will serve time behind bars.

Judge Questions Whether Killing Should Have Been Charged

Boulder County District Court Judge Dea Lindsey sentenced Norton to two years of probation and ordered him to donate $25,000 to a medical aid-in-dying charity.

Kim Roller reportedly received an identical sentence.

Lindsey openly questioned whether Norton should have faced criminal charges at all.

“I go back and forth on whether this should be a charge at all,” Lindsey said.

“I think it’s a philosophical issue.”

The remarkable comments came despite Colorado law limiting legal physician-assisted suicide to qualifying circumstances.

Mildred Roller was not terminally ill.

Yet the punishment for illegally euthanizing her included financially supporting an organization associated with the same practice.

Notably, Judge Lindsey’s judicial profile states that she previously worked on “dependency and neglect” cases for Boulder County.

Mother Was Suffocated With Nitrogen Gas

The Boulder County Coroner’s Office determined that the 91-year-old died after oxygen was displaced by nitrogen while a plastic bag covered her head.

Dr. Meredith Frank wrote in the autopsy opinion that Roller died a harrowing death.

She died from “asphyxia due to a bag over the head and displacement of oxygen by nitrogen gas,” Frank revealed.

The autopsy also established that she “did not have a terminal illness and had not been found incompetent,” according to the Colorado Hometown Weekly.

Norton ultimately accepted a plea agreement with the Boulder County District Attorney’s Office rather than face trial on the original allegations.

Defendants Stand to Benefit from Estate

The case becomes even more controversial because both defendants were positioned to benefit financially from Mildred Roller’s estate.

According to the Colorado Hometown Weekly, her will directed that her children receive equal shares of her estate.

The estate reportedly included a savings account containing approximately $655,540.

The issue has triggered a backlash over the inheritance Norton will ultimately receive.

Many are questioning whether Colorado law should block his ability to collect from the estate because of his conviction.

Nevertheless, the potential financial benefit has added another troubling dimension to a case in which two people admitted participating in the death of an elderly relative and avoided incarceration.

Assisted-Suicide Advocate Condemns Case

Colorado law allows physician-assisted suicide under specific legal conditions, but those rules did not apply to Mildred Roller.

Live Action’s Bridget Sielicki condemned the broader practice.

“There is never a situation in which it is appropriate to help a person end his or her own life, even if sick or disabled,” Sielicki said.

The sentence now leaves Norton and Roller on probation rather than behind bars.

And in one of the case’s strangest twists, a punishment imposed for illegally helping end a woman’s life will send $50,000 combined to an organization associated with legal assisted suicide.

A healthy 91-year-old woman was suffocated with a plastic bag and nitrogen gas.

What was once unthinkable is now being openly proposed.

Three physicians have published a paper arguing that patients who voluntarily choose euthanasia should die through the surgical removal of their vital organs, making organ harvesting itself the direct cause of death.

For many people, this crosses a moral line that should never be crossed.

If accepted, it would legitimise killing patients for their organs under the banner of medicine and compassion, reducing one of society’s most sacred duties, the protection of human life, to a question of utility.

It is difficult not to be reminded of the darkest chapters of recent history, when vulnerable and “undesirable” lives were deemed less worthy of protection and human beings were valued for what could be taken from them rather than for their inherent dignity.

History teaches us that great evils are not normalised overnight.

They begin with small moral compromises, are wrapped in the language of compassion and progress, and slowly become accepted as both necessary and humane.

When society begins to decide that some lives are more useful dead than alive, history has already shown us where that path can lead, and we know how it ends.

Three physicians have sparked outrage after publishing a paper in one of the world’s most prestigious medical journals advocating a radical new form of euthanasia in which patients would be killed by having their vital organs surgically removed.

The proposal calls the practice “death by organ donation” and argues that patients seeking “assisted suicide” should be euthanized through organ harvesting rather than by lethal injection or a fatal drug overdose.

The authors contend that the potential increase in transplantable organs justifies rethinking long-standing ethical and legal barriers that prohibit removing vital organs from living patients.

The proposal has ignited alarm among pro-life advocates and medical ethicists, who warn it represents another step down a dangerous path as euthanasia continues to expand.

Doctors Seek to Rewrite Longstanding Medical Ethics

The paper, titled “Contextualizing the Dead Donor Rule in an Era of Voluntary Euthanasia,” was published earlier this month in The New England Journal of Medicine.

It was authored by Dr. Ian Ball, Dr. Carter Winberg, and Dr. Robert Truog.

“In death by organ donation, the patient’s authorization, experience, and outcome are not altered by whether death occurs moments before or during organ retrieval,” the physicians wrote.

The paper argues that legal euthanasia has fundamentally changed the ethical framework surrounding organ donation.

“Voluntary euthanasia creates a new ethical context, complicating the DDR and established approaches to organ donation: patients are not yet dead, but their death is imminent and results directly from voluntary medical intervention,” the doctors wrote.

“The current legal reality of voluntary euthanasia provides a new context for interpreting the Don’t Kill Rule,” they continued, arguing that euthanasia already “circumvents” the traditional prohibition on physicians intentionally causing death.

“In this landscape, the moral significance of strict temporal sequencing (post, not pre-mortem retrieval) is diminished,” the paper states.

The authors concluded that “ethical focus should therefore shift away from identifying a precise moment of biologic death and toward respecting patients’ autonomous decisions, ensuring that safeguards against coercion and exploitation are robust and advocating for a transparent and publicly accountable process.”

Under current law in Canada and most Western nations, healthy organs may only be removed after a patient has been declared clinically dead.

The proposal would reverse that longstanding principle by making the organ removal itself the direct cause of death.

Proposal Sparks Fierce Backlash

The paper was swiftly condemned by Conservative Member of Parliament Leslyn Lewis, who warned that the proposal threatens vulnerable patients and further erodes respect for human life.

“Reports of proposals to retrieve organs from MAiD patients before death raise profound ethical questions that Canadians should not dismiss,” Lewis wrote on X.

“These discussions underscore the importance of maintaining clear safeguards and ensuring that organ donation never compromises the value we place on human life.”

Lewis said Canadians “deserve thoughtful, transparent debate on these issues.”

“We must protect the vulnerable, uphold informed consent, and ensure that compassion and human dignity remain at the heart of our healthcare system,” she added.

Even supporters of Canada’s medical establishment expressed concern.

University of Toronto bioethicist Kerry Bowman described the proposal as “very problematic.”

“There’s a lot of deep religious concern that if the cause of death is actually organ donation, from a religious point of view, it would be considered very problematic,” Bowman said.

He added that many people outside religious communities also find the proposal deeply disturbing.

“We have enough challenges in this country right now with (MAiD),” Bowman said.

“I would argue this is an unnecessary distraction at a difficult time.”

Canada’s Expanding Euthanasia Regime Faces Growing Scrutiny

Canada legalized euthanasia in 2016 under its Medical Assistance in Dying (MAiD) program.

The country is now scheduled to expand eligibility in 2027 to include people suffering solely from mental illness under Bill C-7 unless the Liberal government intervenes.

The proposal comes as Canada’s euthanasia regime faces mounting criticism over cases in which vulnerable patients have claimed they were steered toward assisted suicide instead of receiving medical treatment or long-term care.

Canada’s Catholic bishops recently marked the tenth anniversary of legalized euthanasia by urging Canadians to reject what they described as growing complacency toward the practice.

The bishops said euthanasia can “never” be morally acceptable and called for renewed respect for the sanctity of human life.

Critics have also pointed to cases in which hospitals allegedly promoted MAiD to seriously ill patients, while others have described feeling pressured toward assisted suicide after struggling to obtain adequate healthcare.

Among them is disabled Canadian Roger Foley, who suffers from a degenerative neurological disease and has repeatedly said he is being pressured into accepting “assisted suicide” rather than receiving the care he needs to continue living.

Foley is pleading for help to continue living while Canada’s socialized healthcare system pushes to euthanize him for the “greater good.”

The latest proposal to make organ harvesting the mechanism of euthanasia is likely to intensify concerns that Canada’s assisted suicide program continues to move beyond the limits originally presented to the public.

While the records do not disclose the prisoners’ genders, locations, or reasons for seeking MAiD, the trend highlights a disturbing reality: Canada’s failing healthcare system and expanding euthanasia regime are pushing vulnerable populations—including the disabled, mentally ill and incarcerated—toward premature death.

A system that encourages death over care

Canada’s MAiD program was initially marketed as a compassionate option for the terminally ill. But its rapid expansion—now covering chronic illness, mental health conditions and even poverty-driven despair—has turned it into a grim alternative for those failed by the country’s crumbling social safety net.

According to BrightU.AI‘s Enoch, MAiD accounted for 3.1% of all Canadian deaths (10,064 cases) in 2021. By 2022, that number jumped to 13,241—a 31.2% increase in just one year. Today, euthanasia is Canada’s sixth-leading cause of death, though Statistics Canada controversially excludes it from official mortality rankings, citing underlying illnesses as the primary cause rather than the lethal injection itself.

“The government is essentially hiding the true scale of this crisis,” said Alex Schadenberg, executive director of the Euthanasia Prevention Coalition. “People aren’t choosing MAiD because they want to die—they’re choosing it because they’ve been abandoned by the system.”

The revelation that inmates are accessing MAiD adds another layer to Canada’s euthanasia crisis. At least 15 federal prisoners have died by assisted suicide since 2018, with four deaths occurring in 2024 alone. While CSC has not disclosed whether these cases fell under Track 1 (terminal illness) or Track 2 (non-terminal suffering), advocates warn that incarcerated individuals—already vulnerable to poor healthcare and mental health struggles—may be pressured into choosing death over rehabilitation.

“Prisons are supposed to rehabilitate, not facilitate suicide,” said Conservative MP Marilyn Gladu, whose private member’s bill seeks to ban MAiD for mental illness. “When inmates see no hope for treatment or parole, euthanasia becomes an escape hatch for systemic neglect.”

With average healthcare wait times at 27.7 weeks, some patients see MAiD as their only escape from suffering. Stories abound of disabled individuals denied housing support, veterans offered euthanasia instead of post-traumatic stress disorder (PTSD) treatment and low-income Canadians choosing death over unaffordable living costs.

“The system is broken, and MAiD has become the government’s Band-Aid solution,” said Dr. Ramona Coelho, a physician advocating for safeguards. “Instead of fixing healthcare, they’re offering death as a cure for despair.”

Canada’s euthanasia experiment has spiraled far beyond its original intent, transforming from a last-resort option for the terminally ill into a rapidly expanding death program affecting prisoners, the mentally ill and those failed by social services. With MAiD deaths now surpassing 90,000 since 2016—and lobbyists pushing to extend it to minors—the country faces a moral reckoning.

As deaths continue to rise, critics warn that Canada is normalizing euthanasia as a substitute for care, leaving the most vulnerable with fewer choices—and fewer reasons to live.

Canada’s euthanasia crisis has now reached inside federal prisons, with new statistics revealing that the government has now begun euthanizing prisoners under the nation’s state-sanctioned “assisted suicide” program.

The new data revealed that at least 15 federal prison inmates were euthanized under Canada’s Medical Assistance in Dying (MAiD) scheme since 2018.

The information comes from an Order Paper response showing that Correctional Service Canada approved MAiD deaths for inmates before their sentences were completed.

The finding is raising serious questions about coercion, oversight, and the rapid normalization of euthanasia inside government institutions.

The numbers show a grim escalation, revealing that inmated has been euthanized every year since the expansion emerged in 2018.

The documents leave out key details, including the identities of the inmates, the prisons where the deaths occurred, or whether the individuals were male or female.

The government also refused to clarify whether each case fell under Track 1 MAiD (terminal or serious illness) or Track 2.

What is clear is that since legalization, 67 federal inmates have applied for MAiD, with requests rising sharply in the past two years.

Canada’s euthanasia program, introduced in 2016 under former Prime Minister Justin Trudeau, has expanded at a pace unmatched anywhere in the world.

According to a new report from the Euthanasia Prevention Coalition, Canada has euthanized 90,000 people since 2016.

The number is a staggering figure for a country of only 40 million people.

Advocacy groups have pushed aggressively for even more expansion, including extending euthanasia to minors.

A Conservative MP’s recent private member’s bill, which would ban MAiD for those suffering solely from mental illness, received full backing from the Euthanasia Prevention Coalition.

The bill stands in direct opposition to the long-running effort by Canada’s ruling Liberal Party government to expand MAiD to people with mental illness alone.

Prime Minister Mark Carney’s Liberal government appears committed to maintaining that trajectory.

However, after overwhelming pushback from medical groups, mental health experts, pro-life advocates, disability-rights organizations, and the majority of Canadian provinces, Ottawa temporarily delayed the mental-illness expansion until 2027.

Even so, the trend is unmistakable as MAiD is rapidly becoming a default “solution” for suffering, poverty, disability, and now incarceration.

What was once billed as a compassionate option for the terminally ill has morphed into a system where vulnerable Canadians, including prisoners, are dying by state-sanctioned lethal injection in ever-growing numbers.

And with no transparency, no demographic data, and no clarity on how these decisions were made behind prison walls, critics warn that Canada’s euthanasia program is entering a new, darker phase.
