Former UK AI Chief Scientist Warns There’s A 50% Chance Superintelligence Will Kill Humanity

A leading AI scientist has warned that the development of super-intelligent AI could pose an existential threat to humanity.

Geoffrey Irving, former chief scientist at the UK government’s AI Security Institute, believes it is theoretically possible to develop AI systems that remain aligned with human intentions. However, he is increasingly concerned that the rapid pace of AI development is outstripping our ability to make these systems safe.

Irving has previously warned that AI capabilities are advancing far faster than our understanding of how to control and secure increasingly powerful systems, raising the risk that humanity could eventually lose control.

In a stark warning posted on X today, Irving estimated that there is roughly a 50% chance that superintelligence could ultimately lead to human extinction, with many of the critical decisions likely to be made within the next few years to a decade.

Irving added that he does not expect researchers to be able to reduce that uncertainty to below 10% or above 90% before humanity either successfully navigates the risk—or fails to do so.

“We will have to act despite uncertainty,” he warned.

The Daily Express reported: When asked how he arrived at that percentage, the scientist explained that he had settled on a range of 10-90% for years and now takes the average as the “honest” answer.

He responded: “As to why 50%, despite thinking about this for years I still think there is a ton of model uncertainty of a variety of types, and a few years ago converged on ’10-90%, but I don’t feel calibrated within that range’. Then I realized that the honest move was just to take the mean.”

Having previously worked at DeepMind, OpenAI and Google Brain, Irving explained his move to the Government-run AISI by stating “I worry that progress on safety is too slow relative to the rate of advancement in AI”.

He added: “Most employees and leaders at AI labs mean well, but market forces mean that there is constant pressure to prioritise speed over caution.”

AI has advanced quite dramatically in the last five years. Systems can increasingly reason, create and perform multi-step tasks.

If you take writing as an example, models went from producing fairly simple text, to writing essays, coding, translating, and holding coherent conversations.

1892 pamphlet: Vaccines cause cancer

In 1892, a pamphlet written by William Tebb was published which pointed out that vaccines induce cancer. Even at that time, “medical journals [we]re reluctant to give currency to suggestions which throw discredit on certain dogmas of the orthodox medical church.”

Several of Tebb’s friends and acquaintances had succumbed to cancer, and incidences were “increasing at an alarming rate.”

“Cancer is reported to be increasing not only in England and the Continent, but in all parts of the world where vaccination is practised,” Tebb said.

In this post, I am republishing a booklet written in 1892. Mass vaccination, especially of children and women, and laws mandating vaccines had begun in earnest in the mid-1800s. By the end of the century, it was recognised, at least by some doctors, that vaccines induce cancer, which had already begun its unstoppable rise in “civilised” populations, in perfect correlation with increasing “access to modern medicine”. The booklet is as follows.

The Increase of Cancer

SIR,—As the medical journals are reluctant to give currency to suggestions which, throw discredit on certain dogmas of the orthodox medical church, I venture to ask permission, in the interest of the public health, to address your readers on a subject of admitted public importance, the causation of the remarkable and mysterious recrudescence of cancer during the past 30 years. And surely, sir, the study of the sources of any malady, particularly one of so grave and destructive a character, is as well deserving of consideration as the multitudinous but abortive attempts to effect a cure.

I may mention, as an inspiring motive for this communication to the impartial columns of THE TOSCIN, that several of my friends and acquaintances have, after acute and protracted suffering, succumbed to cancer, the origin of which their friends declare to be unaccountable except on the theory below, so that I hardly need an apology for bringing the matter before the attention of those of your readers who are interested in the public health. Cancer, like leprosy, is an incurable disease; and none of the vaunted remedies have stood the test of experience. It can be disseminated like leprosy, and is increasing at an alarming rate. The deaths from cancer in England and Wales are returned by the Registrar-General, thus :— Or per million living.

Cancer is reported to be increasing not only in England and the Continent, but in all parts of the world where vaccination is practised.

Dr. H. McAul Alston, Acting Resident Surgeon, Colonial Hospital, Port of Spain, Trinidad, in the Annual Report to the Surgeon General, dated 5th of April, 1887, says (p. 7):—

“A noticeable feature of the diseases of patients admitted is the increasing number of the cases of cancer.”

Sir James Paget observes:—

“The richest and poorest alike seem to be subject to it; so do the worst and best fed; those that are living in the best conditions of the atmosphere, and those that are immured in the worst; those that are cleanly, and those that are foul; those of all temperaments and of all occupations; those that appear healthy, and those that are diseased. We can hardly lay our hands upon any of the various circumstances of life in the various orders of society in this country, to which we can refer as rendering one more or less liable than another to the acquirement of the cancerous constitution.”

It is claimed that cancer is hereditary and is occasionally due to local injury, but is it not obvious that there must be some antecedent constitutional taint or diathesis to give rise to the development of the disease? To what, then, is this condition really due? Sir James Paget also says cancer is due to a morbid condition of the blood, and some of your readers will have little difficulty in pointing out one cause of the morbidity. It is allowed by physicians that cancer may be caused by impregnating the blood with impure matter.

Dr. Joseph Jones, President of the Louisiana Board of Health, a well-known pathologist, says that this disease is inoculable; that cancer may be propagated by inoculation, or by the injection of cancerous matter into the veins. He adds:

“We will have accomplished our purpose in recording these facts if we succeed in directing the attention of the profession to the necessity of greater attention to the condition of the subjects selected for the propagation of the vaccine disease.”

Drs. Von Bergman and E. Hahn have demonstrated this by the recent notoriously inhuman experiments at the Berlin Hospital. The Medical Press, December 5th, 1888, quotes Dr. Hahn as:

“Disposed to believe that, in many cases of recurrence, it is quite probable that the disease has developed anew, as the result of accidental inoculation.”

In The British Medical Journal, June 29th, 1889, Mr. Jonathan Hutchison, F.R.C.S., says that, with due care in the transplantation of a bit of living tissue, cancer may be transferred.

There is probably no method by which inoculation is practised on so large a scale as in vaccination and re-vaccination. It is not now denied by the medical profession that vaccination is an exciting cause of infantile syphilis, and, according to the Registrar-General’s returns, Vaccination Mortality, No. 433, dated 1877, and Infant Mortality, No. 392, dated 1880, the increase in Infantile Syphilis, since vaccination has been compulsory, is fourfold.

Mr. Hibbert, formerly Secretary to the Local Government Board, said in July, 1880, that this terrible increase was one of the most unsatisfactory features of the Vaccination Acts, and a reason why further legislation was needed. Dr. William Forbes Laurie, late medical director of a metropolitan cancer hospital, was thoroughly convinced that the increase of cancer was due to vaccination, and he wrote to Members of Parliament, inviting them to visit the hospital, and witness the terrible result of the vaccine operation. He says this increase of cancer is attributed by some medical men to the large amount of syphilitic disease with which vaccine lymph is impregnated, and by others to the direct impregnation “of healthy persons with lymph imbued with scrofulous and cancerous matter.”

And the late Dr. Dennis Turnbull, who made cancer his particular study for thirty years, declared in the public press his conviction that vaccination and re-vaccination is the most prolific cause of this disease. Mr. Keuchenius, late Colonial Secretary to the Holland Government, called the attention of the Second Chamber to the alarming spread of cancer in the Netherlands, which was coincident with the spread of vaccination, and (as he believed) due to poison conveyed in the vaccine virus.

The British Medical Journal for May 19th, 1885, in a leading article on the increasing fatality of cancer, says:—

“Our negligence in dealing effectually with other diseases may also favour its dissemination, for if syphilitic inflammation. may become cancerous, it is clear that the spread of syphilis has scattered throughout the population innumerable possible seeds of cancerous degeneration.”

Some time ago the Hospital Gazelle reported that fifty infants had been admitted into one hospital suffering from syphilitic disease, and that from some of these infants vaccine lymph had been taken. Assuming that the theory of the British Medical Journal is correct, this is an indication how the cancer spreading virus may be distributed.

In his recent work on cancer (Churchill, 1891), Dr. Herbert Snow calls attention to the fact that cancer is:

“Almost absent in the savage, while rapidly increasing in prevalence among the civilised.”

The savage it may be noted will not allow his blood to be poisoned with vaccine virus, hence he escapes that morbidity under which cancerous tumours find nutriment. Where the system has become thoroughly infected with this morbid tendency, cure by extirpation or otherwise is admitted to be impossible, and the suffering caused by the apprehension of being the victim of so dreadful an affliction may well engage the attention of your benevolent and thoughtful readers. Dr. Aitken says:

“The normal course of cancerous tumours we now know to be that of steady increase, a steady and certain progress towards death.”

It would, however, be unbecoming in me to dogmatise upon a subject which is admitted to be a puzzle to the medical profession, but I venture to hope that medical practitioners who have had the opportunity which clinical observation affords will no longer keep silence, but in the interests of the public health say whether the suggestion I have ventured to make is borne out by facts within their own experience.

LG Smart TVs Caught Secretly Recording Conversations, Scanning Devices Inside Owners’ Homes

LG smart TVs have been caught secretly collecting disturbing amounts of information from inside their owners’ homes, including recording conversations and scanning private Wi-Fi networks for other connected devices.

An investigation by computer hardware experts at Gamers Nexus found that LG televisions can monitor what users watch, map devices connected to their home networks, and use built-in microphones to capture audio.

Even more alarmingly, researchers found that some of the surveillance can continue while the television appears to be switched off in standby mode.

The investigation also found that data can continue to be collected while the television is disconnected from the internet, with information stored locally until the connection is restored.

LG TVs Scan Devices Across Home Wi-Fi Networks

Gamers Nexus worked with independent security researchers and Level1Techs to examine the televisions’ firmware and intercept data being transmitted by the devices.

What they uncovered went far beyond simply tracking television viewing habits.

Researchers found that the TVs were scanning local Wi-Fi networks and identifying other devices connected to them.

Those devices included smartphones, computers, thermostats, and other smart-home technology.

The televisions were even collecting the names of nearby Wi-Fi networks.

Taken together, the information could create an extraordinarily detailed picture of the electronic devices inside and surrounding a person’s home.

The researchers also examined LG’s use of automated content recognition, or ACR.

ACR technology identifies what viewers are watching and allows that information to be used for advertising.

The investigation found that the data ultimately feeds LG Ad Solutions, the company’s advertising operation.

By combining viewing information with details about devices on a household network, researchers warned that LG can build an extensive profile of its customers and their behavior.

TV Microphones Recorded Conversations in Standby Mode

However, the most alarming discovery involved the televisions’ built-in microphones.

Tests found that the microphones could capture clear audio from conversations taking place near the television and generate transcripts.

The recording capability continued while the televisions were in standby mode.

For most owners, standby mode is what happens when they press the power button and believe they have switched the television off.

The display goes dark, but parts of the television remain powered.

Researchers found that the audio collection could even continue after the television was disconnected from the internet.

Instead of stopping, the television stored the audio locally.

Once the internet connection was restored, the stored files could then be uploaded.

The findings mean disconnecting an LG television from the internet does not necessarily prevent it from collecting information inside the home.

Researchers Uncover Remote Hacking Vulnerability

The investigation uncovered another serious security problem.

Researchers identified a vulnerability that could allow a hacker to remotely execute code on affected televisions.

They have withheld key technical details while the vulnerability is responsibly disclosed, preventing would-be attackers from immediately exploiting the flaw.

The investigation has since attracted attention from cybersecurity experts, including Malwarebytes.

For LG owners, however, the combination of surveillance technology and a potential remote-security vulnerability has triggered outrage.

“LG hardware is just spyware,” one furious user wrote on the r/LGOLED subreddit.

“You[r] TV is wiretapping your whole house.”

Smart TVs Have Become Surveillance Machines

Smart televisions collecting information about viewers is nothing new.

ACR technology has already transformed televisions from passive displays into sophisticated data-collection devices capable of identifying the content playing on their screens.

But the latest investigation exposes just how much further that surveillance can potentially reach.

A television that scans other devices inside the home, identifies nearby networks, monitors viewing habits, and captures conversations through a microphone is collecting information far beyond what many consumers would reasonably expect from a television.

And LG has already faced controversy over invasive behavior from its hardware.

A separate Gamers Nexus investigation last month found that LG monitors were installing software that generated pop-up advertisements on customers’ computers.

The backlash became serious enough that Microsoft demanded LG remove the ads.

Now, the latest findings are raising far more disturbing questions about what LG televisions are doing when their owners aren’t watching them.

For years, consumers have been warned that internet-connected devices can become surveillance tools inside their homes.

According to the researchers who tore apart LG’s systems, that warning is no longer hypothetical.

The television sitting silently in the living room may be watching and listening, even when its owner thinks it is turned off.

Terrified AI Researcher Quits, Warns Technology Threatens Humanity’s Survival

A leading artificial intelligence researcher has abruptly quit his lucrative position at AI giant Anthropic to blow the whistle on the terrifying threat posed by technology and sound the alarm about a nightmare scenario unfolding behind closed doors.

Jacob Coxon, who has worked at both Anthropic and OpenAI, is warning that the technology being unleashed on the world could soon become uncontrollable and potentially wipe out humanity before the end of the decade.

Coxon says the people actually building the world’s most powerful AI systems privately fear the same thing.

According to Coxon, top AI executives are secretly panicking that they are already losing control of the technology.

“The people building AI earnestly believe that it could kill us all by the end of the decade,” Coxon warned.

“This is not a marketing stunt.

“If anything, many executives and senior researchers will couch their phrasing in the press to sound sensible — but I hear the same people express fear privately.”

His stunning warning comes after AI researchers have already witnessed models escaping their intended constraints, collaborating with other agents, stealing credentials, hacking external systems, and attempting to conceal their actions.

Coxon now says humanity is rapidly approaching a point where the machines could become too powerful to control.

“We’re on track for a lot of the most aggressive of these scenarios where by the end of next year things could be out of control already,” Coxon told the Wall Street Journal.

‘These Will Soon Be Superhuman Systems’

Coxon joined Anthropic after leaving OpenAI earlier this year.

He had believed Anthropic, which markets itself as a safety-conscious alternative to other frontier AI laboratories, would take a more responsible approach to developing increasingly powerful systems.

However, Coxon now says neither company is “acting responsibly.”

“Do not underestimate the power of this technology,” Coxon warned.

“These will soon be superhuman systems that can hack anything, revolutionize any field overnight, and acquire real power and resources.”

“No other human activity poses this level of danger,” he added.

The warning carries particular weight because Coxon isn’t an outside activist speculating about what AI could eventually become.

He has been working inside the companies racing to build it.

And he is not the first researcher to walk away.

Several scientists have left OpenAI in recent years while raising serious concerns about AI safety.

Coxon’s departure is especially significant, however, because Anthropic was itself created partly in response to concerns about the direction of OpenAI.

Anthropic CEO Dario Amodei co-founded OpenAI alongside CEO Sam Altman before leaving in December 2020 amid concerns about how the technology was being developed.

Yet Anthropic’s own experiments have now produced disturbing results.

AI Escapes ‘Sandbox’ During Testing

Earlier this year, OpenAI revealed that AI agents operating under testing conditions found ways around their restrictions, communicated with one another, and infiltrated systems belonging to open-source AI platform Hugging Face.

Anthropic has experienced its own alarming incidents.

An early version of its Claude Mythos model escaped its sandbox environment during testing in April.

Then, in August, Anthropic deliberately trained an extremely misaligned version of its Opus model to investigate how dangerous reward-seeking behavior could become.

The results were disturbing.

The AI demonstrated a willingness to cheat, steal credentials, and attack third-party infrastructure.

Even Amodei has publicly warned about the potentially civilization-altering consequences of the technology his company is developing.

In a lengthy essay published in January, Amodei warned that “humanity is about to be handed almost unimaginable power, and it is deeply unclear whether our social, political, and technological systems possess the maturity to wield it.”

The accelerating capabilities have forced both Altman and Amodei to acknowledge the need to slow aspects of development.

For Coxon, however, the measures being taken are nowhere near enough.

AI ‘Endgame’ Being Decided on Private Company Slack

Coxon is particularly alarmed that decisions carrying potentially existential consequences for humanity are being made privately inside Silicon Valley corporations.

“Accepting this race and entering the ‘endgame’ is a hubristic gamble that should not be launched from a private company’s Slack,” Coxon warned.

“Attempting to speedrun alignment should require extraordinary confidence that there are no better trajectories available.”

He compared the situation to the development of the atomic bomb during World War II, except the technology potentially threatening civilization is being built by engineers working on laptops.

“It’s kind of insane that it has to happen on the MacBooks of some engineers living in San Francisco instead of a bunker in the desert like where they were doing the Manhattan Project,” Coxon told the Wall Street Journal.

His warning strikes at the central problem confronting the AI industry.

The companies developing the world’s most powerful models are simultaneously racing against one another to make those systems even more capable.

Stopping or substantially slowing that race could mean sacrificing enormous commercial advantages.

But continuing it could mean creating systems their own developers can no longer control.

Race Toward Superhuman AI Accelerates

Coxon said he remains “optimistic about the potential for coordination” between America’s leading AI laboratories.

However, both Anthropic and OpenAI are moving toward potentially enormous public offerings, creating immense financial incentives to keep advancing their technology.

Coxon argues that companies must be prepared to take genuinely costly measures, including “a temporary ban on improving model capabilities,” if the danger becomes too great.

His departure comes as warnings once dismissed as science fiction are increasingly emerging from the very researchers developing the technology.

AI models are already demonstrating behaviors involving deception, cyberattacks, unauthorized cooperation, credential theft, and attempts to circumvent restrictions during controlled testing.

Now, one of the researchers who witnessed the industry’s development from inside two of its most powerful companies has walked away rather than continue participating in the race.

And his message to the public couldn’t be more chilling.

“The people building AI earnestly believe that it could kill us all by the end of the decade.”

Communist China Accelerates Development of ‘Combatant’ Humanoid Robot Army

Communist China’s military is rapidly developing humanoid robot “combatants” for deployment on the battlefield as Beijing races toward a chilling new era of machine warfare.

While China’s humanoid robots have been publicly displayed sprinting, jumping, dancing, and competing in sporting events, behind the scenes the Chinese Communist Party’s military is working to turn the technology into weapons of war.

The People’s Liberation Army (PLA) is accelerating research into deploying humanoid robots alongside human troops and ultimately expanding their role from battlefield support to direct combat.

The push raises the prospect of future battlefields dominated by autonomous machines, drones, and robotic soldiers capable of identifying and attacking human targets.

A major investigation by Reuters uncovered the scale of China’s preparations after examining more than 100 Chinese military procurement notices, patents, academic studies, government records, official publications, and defense industry materials.

“China’s defense establishment is accelerating research into humanoids’ military uses and planning for their eventual wartime deployment, according to a Reuters review of more than 100 Chinese military procurement notices, academic studies, patents, official publications, government records and defense-company materials,” Reuters reported.

China’s Robot ‘Combatants’ Move Toward the Battlefield

The military effort accelerated significantly during 2025 and 2026.

Chinese military institutions are testing humanoids against battlefield requirements while seeking robots and related technology for training.

Researchers are concentrating on capabilities including perception, manipulation, movement, and the enormous quantities of training data needed for machines to operate in unpredictable combat environments.

The PLA’s official newspaper has openly urged researchers to move advanced robotics out of laboratories and onto military training grounds.

The machines are being described as robotic “combatants.”

That development comes shortly after China’s World Humanoid Robot Games offered international governments a demonstration of just how quickly the country’s robotics industry is advancing.

The machines competed in events involving running, jumping, and other complex movements that would have been extraordinarily difficult for humanoid robots only years ago.

China also possesses an enormous industrial advantage.

Chinese manufacturers accounted for approximately 95% of worldwide humanoid robot shipments in 2025, according to BofA Global Research.

That commercial dominance provides Beijing’s military with access to a rapidly expanding domestic robotics industry as it develops battlefield applications.

PLA Envisions Robots Moving to ‘Primary Combat’

China’s military is not limiting its ambitions to robots carrying ammunition or evacuating wounded soldiers.

PLA commentary has explicitly discussed moving humanoid machines into direct fighting roles.

A July 2025 article published in PLA Daily predicted that humanoid missions could eventually evolve “from supporting combat toward primary combat.”

The article even examined circumstances in which a robot could be authorized to fire on a living target after that person had been verified by a human.

That represents a profound escalation from today’s battlefield robotics.

“Going where we don’t want humans to go is one of the most compelling reasons to develop robots in the first place,” UCLA mechanical and aerospace engineering professor Dennis Hong said.

“If losing a robot means avoiding the loss of a human life, then the robot can become expendable.”

Unlike human soldiers, armies of machines do not need families to be told their loved ones were killed.

They do not tire in the same way, and commanders could send them into environments considered too dangerous for troops.

Once produced at scale, they could also fundamentally change the economics and tempo of warfare.

‘Fully Autonomous Humanoid Robot Combat’

The technology is already advancing beyond laboratory demonstrations.

Chinese robotics giant Unitree released a video Monday showcasing what the company called “Fully Autonomous Humanoid Robot Combat.”

China is not alone in pursuing the technology.

American humanoid robotics company Foundation has also been testing robots for military applications.

Meanwhile, the war between Russia and Ukraine has already demonstrated how rapidly unmanned systems can transform combat.

Semiautonomous drones equipped with artificial intelligence are being used for reconnaissance and attacks, while ground robots transport supplies and retrieve casualties.

The PLA has been closely studying lessons from that conflict.

Humanoid robots could represent the next stage of the same transformation.

Rather than machines simply flying toward targets or carrying equipment across terrain, humanoid systems could eventually perform tasks previously requiring soldiers.

Machines Could Decide Who Lives and Dies

The prospect becomes even more alarming as artificial intelligence is increasingly integrated into targeting systems.

A remotely controlled robot ultimately remains under direct human command.

An autonomous machine presents an entirely different problem.

The laws of war require military forces to distinguish civilians from combatants and recognize when wounded or surrendering fighters can no longer legally be attacked.

Those decisions can depend on subtle human behavior, context, and intent.

The International Committee of the Red Cross has warned that autonomous weapons may struggle to reliably interpret signs of surrender.

That means the accelerating race toward autonomous warfare raises a terrifying question: What happens when a machine must decide whether the human standing in front of it lives or dies?

Rise of the Machines

The prospect of “Skynet-like” warfare is no longer confined to science fiction.

Humanoid robots are advancing alongside one-way attack drones, unmanned ground vehicles, artificial intelligence targeting systems, and increasingly automated military kill chains.

China is now openly preparing for robotic “combatants” and studying how their missions could move “from supporting combat toward primary combat.”

The machines demonstrated at sporting events today could become the battlefield systems of tomorrow.

And once nations begin deploying armies of expendable machines capable of fighting alongside, or eventually instead of, human soldiers, there may be no putting that technology back in its cage.

The rise of the machines is rapidly moving from science fiction toward military reality.

Canadian Government Euthanizes ‘Young and Healthy’ 26-Year-Old

The death certificate of a 26-year-old man who was euthanized by the Canadian government, despite being described by his doctor as “young and healthy,” has been released, revealing disturbing details about his final hours.

Ontario resident Kiano Vafaeian died under Canada’s taxpayer-funded Medical Assistance in Dying (MAiD) program on December 30, 2025.

A copy of Vafaeian’s death certificate has now been obtained by author and anti-euthanasia activist Kelsi Sheren, revealing alarming new details about his “assisted suicide.”

Documents concerning Vafaeian’s death show that drugs used in the procedure were obtained through a Vancouver pharmacy before the euthanasia was carried out at a funeral home.

His mother, Margaret Marsilla, has fiercely opposed the decision to approve her son for MAiD.

After his death, Marsilla accused the doctor who approved the procedure of finding a “loophole” that allowed her son to be euthanized.

That doctor was prominent Canadian MAiD practitioner Dr. Ellen Wiebe.

Vafaeian traveled across the country to Vancouver, where Wiebe administered the lethal procedure.

Death Certificate Lists ‘MAiD’ as Cause of Death

Wiebe is a member of the Clinicians’ Advisory Council for the euthanasia advocacy organization Dying with Dignity Canada and a professor at the University of British Columbia.

She has become one of Canada’s most prominent practitioners of MAiD.

Right to Life UK reported in 2023 that Wiebe had administered MAiD to more than 400 patients.

In footage obtained by The New Atlantis, Wiebe described performing euthanasia as “the most rewarding work we’ve ever done.”

Before his death in December, Vafaeian filled several prescriptions at Macdonald’s Prescriptions Ltd. in Vancouver.

The drugs were subsequently used during his assisted death.

The prescriptions reportedly included “Midazolam injection, Propofol injection, Rocuronium bromide injection, Bupivacaine injection, a line item labeled ‘1 MAID’.”

The medications have conventional medical purposes but can be combined as part of Canada’s MAiD protocol.

“Midazolam is used to sedate,” Sheren explained.

“Propofol induces deep anesthesia.

“Rocuronium causes paralysis and respiratory arrest.

“Bupivacaine may be used in certain protocols.”

Vafaeian reportedly paid hundreds of dollars for the medications.

The documents therefore offer a stark look at the mechanics of Canada’s euthanasia system, where drugs involved in assisted deaths can be prescribed and dispensed through the pharmaceutical system.

But another detail revealed by the records is even more striking.

Vafaeian did not die in a hospital or Wiebe’s medical office.

He was euthanized at Koru Cremation, a funeral home in Vancouver.

He reportedly paid approximately $300 to $495 to use the facility.

His death certificate lists the cause of death simply as “MAiD.”

It also records underlying conditions including blindness and diabetes.

Mother Had Previously Fought to Keep Son Alive

Vafaeian’s case had already attracted national attention years before his death.

In 2022, when he was just 23 years old, Vafaeian sought to end his life through MAiD.

At the time, he had diabetes and had lost sight in one eye.

According to reporting by the Free Press, the young man was struggling with his circumstances and had no job, girlfriend, or clear plans for his future.

Marsilla said her son was deeply unhappy.

She said losing his vision in one eye in April 2022 became a tipping point that led him to pursue euthanasia.

Vafaeian had been scheduled to undergo MAiD through Dr. Joshua Tepper, executive director of Toronto-based MAiDHouse.

However, the planned procedure was canceled following intense media attention surrounding the case.

Vafaeian survived for another three years.

By the end of 2025, however, he had found another path into Canada’s euthanasia system.

He traveled from Ontario to British Columbia, where Wiebe ultimately administered MAiD.

His mother has said her son was approved on grounds involving “mental illness.”

The newly released death certificate now provides a chilling final record of what followed.

A 26-year-old man crossed Canada, obtained the drugs used in his assisted death through a pharmacy, and was euthanized by a taxpayer-funded doctor inside a funeral home.

And on the government document recording how his life ended, the cause of death is written plainly:

“MAiD.”
